Canada Hemp Foods was founded in November 2006 (yes, not that long ago) by two "not so young" men who have been taking hemp food products to improve and maintain their health for years. It all began out of a necessity to find a solution to their own somewhat minor, but no less frustrating health issues.

Our first founder, Wallace (Wally) Venechuk has eczema. He was asked by his daughter to try taking hemp oil to relieve his symptoms. Within a matter of days the eczema symptoms dissipated and over a period of a few weeks virtually disappeared. He subsequently switched to hemp seeds due to the ease in which they can be taken.

News of Wally's "success story" soon reached our company's co-founder, Robert Rae. After surviving a year of surgery, numerous chemotherapy treatments, radiation therapy and finally a stem-cell replacement procedure to eradicate his Stage 4B non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Robert was faced with a problem... severe dry skin. This was diagnosed as a combination of vincristine, a chemotherapy, and graft vs. host disease (GVH), an often debilitating side-effect of replacing stem cells with that of a donor. Wally convinced him to try a pound of shelled hemp seed just to see if indeed it might help. At first, Robert somewhat doubted it's therapeutic properties but sure enough, it helped. The problem though still present, is no longer as severe. Also, the weight gain caused by the prednisone doses he was taking (and still takes) was reduced significantly. His general skin condition improved dramatically.

More stories began to emerge of friends, family and others with health problems such as diabetes, weight management, low energy etc., solved either partially or completely by consuming shelled hemp seeds or hemp oil. You can visit our testimonials page for more on this subject.

Finally, both of these gentlemen being the curious types, decided to research the history and the current state of affairs regarding the manufacture, marketing and use of hemp foods. They were surprised to find how little is known (or believed) of this incredible plant's attributes and abilities. They decided to form a company. A company dedicated to the advancement of hemp foods as a natural food source for the betterment of the human condition.

A final (very short) story on our founders' histories:

Wally Venechuk, raised in Gibsons, BC, Canada, recently retired from owning and operating a successful business in his home town for over forty years. He is married and is the father of two daughters, and just this year is a grandfather.

Robert Rae spent most of his adult life in Vancouver, BC. before arriving on the Sunshine Coast in 1992. He has owned and operated a company serving the commercial marine industry since 1995. Robert is married with no children.
